Explaining The Unexplainable

By ,

When my partner, Michelle, and I took the conscious decision to serialize our novel The iCandidate on an app rather than go the more conventional publishing route it was on the absolute understanding that we would let the story go the direction our readers wanted.
We knew it would probably play havoc with the story we had mapped out in our heads. We also felt pretty sure it could lead us in directions we hadn’t foreseen.
What we never considered was that it would result in us getting more than a quarter of the way through the book - and then going back to the beginning and starting over.

Explaining The Unexplainable

Unforeseen

When my partner Michelle and I took the conscious decision to serialize our novel The iCandidate on an app rather than go the more conventional publishing route it was on the absolute understanding that we would let the story go the direction our readers wanted.

The interactive nature of the medium meant that we were able to mold our plot with the help of anyone interested enough to play an active role in the development of the book rather than simply read it.

We knew it would probably play havoc with the story we had mapped out in our heads. We also felt pretty sure it could lead us in directions we hadn’t foreseen.

One More Time…

One More Time…

What we never considered was that it would result in us getting more than a quarter of the way through the book - and then going back to the beginning and starting over.

Phew!

Writing a novel on the NoteStream app means working on so many levels, some real, some imagined that it’s sometimes hard for us to keep up.

A serialized book about a fictional reality TV show about a real presidential race involving interacting real-life and make-pretend characters…

As our publisher says at least once a week: “Phew!”

Add to this the fact that we are not the masters of the destiny of our own book. At the end of each challenge in our political reality show we ask our readers to vote on their favorites. Using the NoteStream app, the readers can choose the three iCandidates they believe should stay in the (fictional) contest. The contestant with the least number of likes goes home (or wherever characters in a book go to die - I would suggest the Nook!).

What Readers Want

This interactivity may not be groundbreaking, but it’s certainly change enough to warrant an article in the Los Angeles Times and interest from some of the country’s major news outlets.

This is all very well, I hear you ask, but why would you need to start your book over if it was getting so much traction?

The answer - because that’s what our readers wanted.

As we wrote The iCandidate, editing and creating on a weekly basis, we quickly became aware that the parallels between our political reality show plot and the actual campaign for the presidency were astonishingly close.

Blurring The Line

With every sentence coming out of Donald Trump’s mouth, the thin line between fact and fiction was diminishing. It became clear to us that we were being served up with a unique opportunity to bridge this fourth wall of literature.

Clear

It was also clear to our readers.

They told us they wanted more of our reality; they wanted to soak up our alternative. The novel’s complex and clever (or so we think) plot would have to wait. Give us more of the show, put us right there in the audience!

That’s what NoteStream’s subscribers told us.

So we did the one thing that would have been impossible for a paper and ink book - we wrote a new introduction involving Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton right from the start.

Then we removed a couple of chapters that were peripheral to the core plot (they will be eased back into the story at a later point) and the updated book was fitted right back in where the old one used to be by technical people who know how to do these things.

Take Your Pick

One blink and it was done.

For our loyal readers who were enjoying the book just as it was, our apologies. Blame democracy in action.

To those who heard our plea for feedback and wrote, in simple terms, that we needed to stick to the political reality show you came in for, please accept our humble thanks. While you may have caused us more work and not a little heartache, this was the reason we decided to publish on an app.

And for those new to NoteStream who are just starting The iCandidate, please forget you ever read this…and enjoy!
