On the Go
Parents: Let’s face it, despite our food prepping efforts and easy to grab snacks stocked in the fridge, sometimes we find ourselves behind the wheel looking for the closest place to pull over and get something to eat.
We all know that fast food is not an ideal option when it comes to feeding your child a nutritious snack or meal, but sometimes you got to do what you got to do – and sometimes that means McDonald’s.
Make the Most of It
While the redheaded clown is most famous for its processed foods, there are some healthy alternatives when you find yourself behind the “Do you want fries with that?” intercom.
Below is a list of healthy alternatives at local fast food restaurants to help you make the best possible choices for you and your children.
There’s no denying that McDonald’s claim to fame is their fries, but the company does offer healthy salads as an alternative.
According to Livestrong.com, the Premium Southwest Salad with grilled chicken has 320 calories and provides a low calorie, high protein, and high fiber meal. The addition of a low-fat salad dressing increases the total calorie content to 370. Rather than ordering a cheeseburger, the Grilled Chicken Ranch Snack Wrap at 270 calories is a great source of protein.
The Fruit N Yogurt Parfait and the Fresh Fruit Smoothie are also healthy dessert alternatives for you and your kids! You can also encourage your kids to order Apple Juice, the Milk Jug, or the Chocolate Milk Jug instead of soda.
When looking for a quick sugar fix, the Wendy’s petite frosty is an even better choice than you would have thought.
For less than 200 calories, the Jr. Frosty will satisfy your craving without leaving you feeling too guilty. Wendy’s also offers the Ultimate Chicken Grill Sandwich with only 7g fat and 34g of protein. Wendy’s also several salads including the Apple Pecan Chicken Salad (hold the blue cheese dressing), Chicken BLT Cobb Salad, and Baja Chili Salad (half size, no tortilla strips).
Ditch the Burger
Rather than ordering a cheeseburger, the Grilled Chicken Ranch Snack Wrap at 270 calories is a great source of protein.
3. Del Taco
At Del Taco, you can order Tacos al Carbon with Chicken for you and your kids – and the best part, is that with only 150 calories and four grams of fat, you can eat a few!
Del Taco also offers a few healthy salad choices such as the Deluxe Chicken Salad and the Deluxe Taco Salad with about 140 calories each. According to eHow.com, if you and your kids prefer burritos, stick with the value bean and cheese burrito, which has less than 300 calories. With all of these options, salsa is the healthiest alternative to guacamole or sour cream.
4. Burger King
The King of Burgers offers quite a few alternatives to the fatty cheeseburger.
The Veggie Burger, The Tendergrill Chicken Sandwich with the Garden Salad, the Caesar Salad with Grilled Chicken, and The Chicken, Apple and Cranberry Salad are all great alternatives.
When looking to order something lighter at Chick-Fil-A, choose the Chargrilled Chicken Sandwich with only 260 calories.
The chicken nuggets are actually not too bad with 400 calories, 19 grams of fat, 15 grams of carbs and 40 grams of protein. Chick-Fil-A also offers a grilled chicken nuggets option that is an even healthier option for the occasional fast-foodies.
Make a Swap
Even if you opt for an occasional drive-through meal, you have no more excuses to eating unhealthy as there are a number of healthy alternatives at the big-name fast food stops.
