Profile: Orange County Register

The Orange County Register honors local people whose everyday acts of bravery uplift and strengthen our community. Each week, we will profile a living local hero, with one extraordinary person deemed Hero of the Month and awarded a stay at the Montage Laguna Beach, one of Orange County's premier resorts. To nominate, go to ocregister.com/heroes or email sdunn@ocregister.com with HEROES in the subject line, and include a brief description of the person you'd like to nominate and why you find them inspiring. Hero: Elizabeth Zarkos Saves Kids & Horses

Lake Forest resident and teacher Elizabeth Zarkos isn't one who craves the limelight. In fact, she spends most of her time serving special-curriculum teens and rescuing horses that would be forgotten.
As founder of Hanaeleh Horse Rescue, Zarkos trains and finds loving homes for abused or neglected horses. When she's not investing her own time and money into this worthwhile endeavor, she's pursuing another noble mission: finishing her doctorate in education at Chapman University. It's perhaps the one thing this selfless person is doing for herself.
